About AgeCompared

If you’ve ever tried to figure out exactly how many days old you are, or wanted to know how your dog's age translates to human years, you probably noticed that most online age calculators are pretty boring. They are usually just blank text boxes that spit out a single line of math.

I built AgeCompared because I wanted a tool that actually visualized the data. I wanted to see the age gap between my friends and me, track exactly when I would hit my 10,000-day milestone on earth, and accurately calculate my pet's age without using the outdated "multiply by seven" myth.

More Than Just Subtracting Years

Building an accurate age calculator is actually more complicated than it sounds. You can't just subtract the birth year from the current year. Our engine runs a precise algorithm that accounts for leap years and the varying lengths of every calendar month. This ensures that when the tool tells you that you are 24 years, 3 months, and 12 days old, the math is completely exact based on today's date.

The Science Behind Our Pet Calculator

One of the biggest reasons AgeCompared exists is to fix pet age math. For decades, people have just multiplied their dog's age by seven to get their "human age." Veterinarians have known for a long time that this is completely inaccurate, because dogs and cats mature much faster in their first two years of life than they do later on.

To fix this, we integrated the official veterinary guidelines provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) directly into our code:

• For Dogs: The first year of life is equal to 15 human years. The second year adds 9 human years. Every year after that adds exactly 5 human years.
• For Cats: The first year is equal to 15 human years. The second year adds 9 human years. Every year after that only adds 4 human years.

Because we programmed this logic directly into the avatar dropdown menu, you can finally put yourself and your pet on the exact same timeline to see who is technically older.

A Strict Commitment to Privacy

When you build a tool that asks people for their birthdates and photos of their faces, privacy has to be the number one priority. AgeCompared is built entirely as a "client-side" application. This is a technical way of saying that all the math, image cropping, and chart generation happens locally inside the memory of your own web browser. We do not have a database. We never upload, save, or store your photos or personal dates on a server. What happens on your screen stays on your screen.
